She’s going to become ugly and fat and you’re going to dump her.

Maybe you should make her give you a good reason why she wants to quit, as opposed to you having to give her a good reason to run.

It might well take up too much of her life, or take the fun out of it. Sometimes people who are good at things like that find it matters most to keep it as something of their own for themselves, and as something that they do when they want to. Getting into a competitive environment or not choosing when and how you do it can make some pretty miserable with things they’re otherwise good at.

Anyway, I wouldn’t set a fixed agenda with making her not quit. I would try to help figure out the reasons why she wants to and if they’re really in her best long-term interests or not. They very well might be.

And for all you know she maybe just needs a break from it to get some perspective or something. Maybe once she misses it she’ll go back. As long as she’s thinking through what she’s doing and has decent reasoning, you should support her.

Why would you want her to do something she has no desire to do? She can be very talented and have a lot of potential but she is only going to go so far if she doesn’t want to do it.
If you can’t come up with a good reason, maybe there isn’t one.

    College scholarship….

    State Championships…

    Someone to run with YOU…

If she quits she’ll gain weight, as about 1000 cals a day that isn’t going to running will probably end up on her thighs for a while. But no more than 10 lbs. At that point she’ll go back to running again but she’ll have lost her ‘edge’ to compete for a while.

Get her to run for charitable causes…

Ask her if she knows any cross country runners that are :
    obese
    have high blood pressure
    high cholesterol
    hypertension
    cellulite
    lung disease
    smoke
    do drugs
    are preggers
    have a low GPA
    gout
    fat ankles
    jiggly butts/thighs/bellies/ etc.

Ask her why she would give up something that she’s good at? Shift focus for a while — train for a 1/2 marathon or full marathon instead. The point is, she’s a runner and may be getting burned out training for a specific distance.
